How to Create a Facemask

Stephanie Guzman • Mar 26, 2020

We are in need of face masks for our staff and residents. Help us create these simple and reusable masks that we can wash and sanitize.
These instructions are adapted from the Deaconess Health System in Indiana.

We need as many as we can GET! Here are a few different examples of facemasks if you are interested in helping us make a some.
  • You can drop them off at our Roseton St. entrance
  • Mail them in to: Artesia Christian Home - 11614 E. 183rd Street Artesia, CA 90701
  • Or give us a call to schedule a pick up

Our preference is for a 3 layers mask as follows:

What you will need:
  • 100% Cotton Fabric (either quilt fabric or batid fabric work best)
  • A Clean pillow case or bedsheet, flat works better, the sheet fabric is a tighter weave and helps to act like a filter.
  • ⅛” to ⅜” Flat elastic (we’ve tried the cord elastic, but this is softer on the ears)
  • Cut the elastic into 7” long pieces.
  • Use a size 14 or 16 needle on your sewing machine.
How to assemble:
  1. Cut 9” x 6” rectangles form the cotton print and the sheet fabric. Be sure any fabric design is placed horizontally.
  2. Put the sheet fabric down on your table first, then put a print fabric on top of that, right side up. Then put another print fabric on top of that, face down.
  3. Put the elastic in between the print layers and place the edges of the elastic out to the corners, pinning through all layers.
  4. Mark a 2”-3” opening in the center of the bottom of your rectangle.
  5. Using a ¼” seam allowance, start to sew around the rectangle, starting at a mark for the opening, back stitching across the elastic at each corner.
  6. Go around the rectangle to the opposite mark for the opening.
  7. Turn the mask inside out.
  8. Pin 3 tucks on each side of the mask. Make sure the tucks are in the same direction. The tucks are about ½” each. Pin in place.
  9. Sew around the edge of the mask twice, making sure to fold in the opening so the opening is sewn shut.

Please send your finished masks to:

The moment that you realize that a loved one is no longer able or wanting to live at home is a life-changing moment. Initially, you may feel sad, angry, and relieved all at once. These initial feelings tend to give way to feeling overwhelmed and anxious about the magnitude of the task ahead and the decisions that must be made to help your loved one take the next step.
